A data warehouse is a collection of data sourced from other systems and integrated in one location. Once integrated it is made available to end-users who use it to support both decision-support and adhoc data query. Depending on client reporting and business requirements we can design a fully normalized data warehouse and/or a data mart using the star schema or snowflake schema architecture.

Due to performance requirements and specialized reporting needs, many times it is more appropriate to build denormalized and summary/aggregate tables into a data mart. If there is not already an enterprise data warehouse, these data mart tables can be directly sourced from the operational systems - these are known as "independent data marts". These are acceptable as long as they do contain redundant data and proliferate into data silos. A better approach but more time-consuming is to design "dependant data marts" fed from the enterprise or specific subject area data warehouse. However the recent popularity of operational BI and dashboards have resulted in many BI applications directly sourcing data from the operational data stores (ODS) or operational systems.

With a single click, our banking client creates multi-page performance reports before important management and board meetings.
